Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Machame Gate (1,800m / 5,905ft) → Machame Camp (2,850m / 9,350ft)
- Distance: ~11 km (~7 miles)
- Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
- Elevation Gain: +1,050m (+3,445ft)
Start your Kilimanjaro climb at Machame Gate , entering through the lush rainforest. The trail is steep in sections but rewards you with beautiful views and wildlife sightings. Arrive at Machame Camp , surrounded by natural beauty.
Day 2
Machame Camp (2,850m / 9,350ft) → Shira Camp (3,800m / 12,467ft)
- Distance: ~6 km (~4 miles)
- Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
- Elevation Gain: +900m (+2,950ft)
Leave the forest behind and enter the open moorland. The path becomes steeper and more rugged as you hike toward Shira Camp , offering panoramic views of the mountain and an early taste of high-altitude trekking.
Day 3
Shira Camp (3,800m / 12,467ft) → Barranco Camp (3,950m / 12,959ft)
A special treat awaits early today — a guided exploration of the Serengeti as the sun rises. The golden light reveals a world coming alive, from predators on the prowl to herds stirring under the morning sky.

Today includes a gradual ascent followed by a dramatic descent into the valley before reaching Barranco Camp . This scenic day sets you up for the famous Barranco Wall climb the next morning.
Day 4
Barranco Camp (3,950m / 12,959ft) → Barafu Camp (4,640m / 15,223ft)
- Distance: ~5 km (~3 miles)
- Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
- Elevation Gain:+690m (+2,264ft)
Begin with the thrilling climb over the Barranco Wall , then descend slightly before ascending again to Barafu Camp . Located on the edge of the crater rim, this is your base before summit night.
Day 5
Barafu Camp (4,640m / 15,223ft) → Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,341ft) → Mweka Camp (3,100m / 10,170ft)
- Distance:~14 km (~9 miles)
- Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
- Elevation Gain/loss: +1,255m / -1,540m (+4,117ft / -5,052ft)
Summit night begins around midnight . Trek steeply to Stella Point on the crater rim, then push to Uhuru Peak , the highest point in Africa. Descend to Mweka Camp for the night, tired but triumphant.
Day 6
Day 6: Mweka Camp (3,100m / 10,170ft) → Mweka Gate (1,630m / 5,348ft) → Moshi/Arusha
- Distance:~10 km (~6 miles)
- Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
- Elevation Loss:-1,470m (-4,823ft)
Descend through the tropical Mweka Rainforest , passing waterfalls and wildlife. Arrive at Mweka Gate , where you’ll receive your summit certificate. Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha to celebrate your achievement.
